Backpack Vagabond is about you. It’s not about me as the traveller, writer, or photographer. It’s about you and the information you get from it. It’s about you and the inspiration you feel after reading the articles on the site. It’s about how I want you to go out and explore the world we live in. Because, maybe, if people travelled more, we would have a better understanding for the world around us, and you would see less of the attitudes you see today.
Mark Twain once said that travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry and narrow-mindedness. He was as right then as he is now. Today we see racism flare up all over the place, we see people with ignorant attitudes gaining ground and power to run our countries. I can’t walk down the street without seeing 10 or more people in dire need of getting some travel in their legs. I see privileged people with judgemental attitudes looking at you as if they’re the highest form of being and you’re a bug they need to crush. Well, it’s true, I’ve been bitten by the travel bug, and now I am transformed into a bug – just so I can bite you.
Because what Mark Twain said is true: travel puts everything in perspective. You gain an understanding for the world that you would never achieve if you spend your whole life in the same town, or even in the same country. If you’ve never gone to the poorer, exploited part of the planet, then you will never have seen – first hand – the implications of your privileged life in the west. But please, don’t think Backpack Vagabond is about making you feel guilty for where you were born. It is not. However Backpack Vagabond is about making you understand that just as you are not responsible for where you were born, neither is anyone else. It’s about making you realise we are all just humans, and as such we are all equal, we are all the same.
We might have different backgrounds, we might have different stories, but we share the same anatomy, the same psyche and the same basic needs. Backpack Vagabond is just for you to gain an understanding of the people that live around this world. The articles are written by experienced travellers, and as such they are excellent observers, who have lived in other countries than their own for long periods of time. Our photographs do their best to capture the true essence of a place, and not just it’s aesthetic value, although we certainly make sure to look for beauty wherever we go.
Backpack Vagabond is your source for information and inspiration alike, and it is also your chance to contribute yourself. Leave a comment with a word or two, a tip or whatever you feel like. I am always looking for more photographers to display their work on this site, as well as guest bloggers with a chance to earn a regular spot as a contributing writer. If you want to be a part of this project feel free to drop us a line or two.
